Junior says that the night of the Winter Formal was one of the "best nights of his life." Why? Explain. Do you think it could be a great night, but also confusing for Junior at the same time? Why?

The winter formal was one of the best nights of Arnold's life because he felt accepted by everyone else. At the beginning of the chapter he was worried because he didn't have enough money and he had to wear his dad's hideous suit. He was worried that people would make fun of him. Penelope yelled that the suit was beautiful which not only made him feel better about himself but it made everyone else jealous of him. When he said that the Winter Formal was one of the best nights of his life, he didn't have to spend any money yet so nobody found out that he was poor, making the night better. The fact that he was with Penelope and they were having fun dancing together made the night even better. I think that it was a great night overall for him but I think it was a little confusing for Arnold because he thought it was going to go horribly wrong and everyone would make fun of him but at that point, everything was perfect. He thought that everyone one would make fun of him for having a suit from the 70's but instead all the guys were jealous of him and all the girls were jealous of Penelope. Even Roger was was nice to him although Arnold punched him. The night didn't go the way he expected it to which must have been surprising and confusing but it was unexpected in a good way.

Do you think that Arnold would have said that the Winter Formal night was the best night of his life at the end of the night (after he got home)? Why?

  1. I think that Arnold would say that it was the best night of his life for many reason. The main reason is that Penelope did not care that he was poor. This definitely boosted his confidence. Once he got this huge secret of his back, he can now trust Penelope and tell her more things. Also, it seemed like everything he did was perfect that night. From his suit being awesome to his rocking dance moves. If you ask Arnold about this night, he would say that it was the best night of his life.

How do you think that Arnold's life will change after he tells Penelope that he is poor?

  2. I think he would say that it was the best night of his life, mostly because Penelope and Roger have accepted him for who he truly is, not who he was pretending to be. I think Arnold will be a much more confident person after confessing his poverty to Penelope. This is because he will no longer have a secret about his life hanging over his head, one that he had to guard all the time. He spent so much time worrying about how to not let on that he was poor that he would've spent making new friends and doing better things. Now that this weight is gone, I expect him to be more outgoing and confident, while also being the same, good-natured Arnold that we've come to know.

    1. I believe Junior would feel that was the best night of his life when he got home and for a long time after. It sounds like an incredible night. He danced with the girl of his dreams for a long time, then ate a meal for free, got a huge secret off his chest and people not only didn't care but they cried for him and drove him home. Everything that could have gone badly went super and he furthered his relationships. His future at this moment (at least at Reardan) looks terrific. When he was home it would seem like a dream come true.

  3. I think it was the best night of his life because he finally had the feeling of being loved by his girlfriend and Roger. When he tells both of them he is poor and he hitch hikes from school. He gets the feeling of being loved the most when Penelope cries because she doesn't want him to go through the pain of being poor (which she doesn't know). But also i don't agree that it was the best night of his life. He says this because he finally feels like a rich white person, which he thinks all Indians want to be. If he was becoming friends with more people on the Rez that had the same personality it wouldn't matter as much to him.
I also think it is hard for Arnold to make sure which friends he can keep because most of what he thinks about is what race he is mixing with.
Who do you think Arnold likes better, Roger or Rowdy?

  4. I think that it was the best night of his life because it showed that his friends have his back and that the white society has accepted him. He went into the dance with a poor state of mind. He was so worried about what people would say when he showed up in his weird suit. But when he got to the dance it was all different. People said that it was a great suit. It showed that his friends and peers dont care if he's an indian living on a reservation. The whole community has changed and began to accept. He's not an outcast anymore, he's a popular kid that's going out with the most popular girl in school. The one problem is that people dont really know what he lives like on the rez. When people find out that he's a poor kid going to school in this rich, white town; what will they think? Will they still accept him or shun him for being different?

  5. When he got back home, not only did Penelope still like him and the guys respect him, but he confessed his secret and cleared his concience from having to keep lying about his wealth. And one of the reasons that Penelope was even going out with him was that he was different, and now that people know about his poverty, that might even strengthen their relationship.

  6. I think that because Roger and Penelope accepted him, he has a different perspective of Reardan. He has friends that are supportive and are ready to catch him if he needs help. Only because Roger and Penelope are friends with Arnold, everyone will want to be friends with him- like at the winter formal. At the Winter Formal Arnold enjoyed himself because people accepted him for his true self and that was because Penelope made him shine. After she did that all the girls liked his old suit. I think the kids at Reardan will act somewhat similar to the girls at the Winter Formal. If he already has two main people in the society of Reardan that follow him, then most of the students there will become his friends and eventually accept him. He may be poor, but he isn't a typical kid from the rez.

  7. After Arnold told Penelope that he was poor, Arnold's life was changed because he found out that someone actually excepted the way he is. Penelope and Rowdy didn't make fun or him or didn't beat him up because he is poor. Arnold's life changed in a positive way because someone wanted to be with him, without making anything up. Will Penelope always be with Arnold? Or will Penelope ditch him?
